Construction and Deconstruction
A new series of works, I am exploring the relationship between the traditional and non-traditional aspects of painting eg. painting as a 3D form with patterned cuts made into the canvas. I perceive these new works as camouflage paintings as they obscure or conceal the original picture surface. The work can be viewed as ‘outside looking in’ in a physical and metaphorical way. Physically the work can be viewed from the outside layer through to the inner layers and beyond to what is seen in the distance, away from the structure. Metaphorically the work may be seen as symbolic of a personal interpretation: that as an artist working today one may feel invisible, unseen or camouflaged. The grid aspect of the cut canvas can be seen as a shedding of skin: awaiting transformation.
